A mother bear and her three cubs were rescued from a large concrete cistern at a Southern California park after trail runners heard distressed sounds coming from inside the tank, according to UPI Odd News. The incident occurred late Saturday night at Marshall Canyon Regional Park in La Verne. Residents running the nearby Claremont Hills Wilderness Park’s 5-Mile Loop Trail followed what one runner described as howling and whimpering noises and discovered the animals in the water-filled cistern. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and personnel from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded. The mother bear was reportedly standing and leaning against the cistern wall to keep herself above the water. One cub managed to climb out without assistance. To reduce the danger of drowning, rescuers drained the cistern. They then enlarged the opening at the top and lowered a ladder, allowing the mother and the two remaining cubs to leave the tank. Fish and Wildlife officials said the water tank is now being secured to help prevent similar wildlife incidents in the future.
