A flash flood that killed at least 353 people in Nepal may have been triggered by the collapse of a large section of glacier, according to preliminary investigations described by Phys.org. More than 1,300 people remained missing, including foreigners and pilgrims. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse, basing its assessment on nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves and satellite imagery. Scientists are still working to determine the precise sequence of events. Preliminary evidence indicates that ice and rock may have plunged into the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River. The falling material could have displaced water and swept up sediment and boulders. Researchers are also examining whether the debris briefly blocked the river, allowing water to accumulate before the blockage failed. That combination may have produced an exceptionally rapid surge. Researchers at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said river levels in affected areas rose by as much as 9 meters—nearly 30 feet—in about 30 minutes. Such a sudden increase would have left little time for people downstream to escape. Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz, said satellite imagery appeared to show that the lower portion of a glacier had broken away. He suggested that ice falling from a great height could have generated effects comparable to a major explosion, although the full mechanism remains under investigation. Scientists have cautioned against directly attributing this specific flood to global warming before the evidence is complete. They do say, however, that rising temperatures are changing the Hindu Kush Himalaya, where glaciers, snow cover, permafrost and mountain slopes are becoming less stable. The region contains more than 63,000 glaciers that supply water to at least 10 major Asian river systems. Research cited by Phys.org found that glacier ice loss across the mountains has accelerated, with loss rates doubling since 2000. Retreating glaciers can enlarge glacial lakes, while thawing permafrost and repeated freezing and thawing can weaken slopes. Those changes can create cascading hazards in which an avalanche or glacier collapse becomes a debris flow, blocks a river and then produces a devastating flood. The area has experienced other major hazards, including a glacial-lake flood in the same valley in 2025 and an ice-and-rock avalanche elsewhere in the region in 2024. Scientists say stronger monitoring, early-warning systems and faster information sharing will be increasingly important. But the scale of the Himalayas makes surveillance difficult, and researchers noted that some cascading disasters may allow only minutes for a response.
