Newborn boy found dead in Sydney rubbish bin as police seek mother

New South Wales police are searching for the mother of a newborn boy whose body was discovered in a rubbish bin in Auburn, in Sydney’s south-west, on Monday morning. Emergency services were called to a unit block on Harrow Road at about 11.20am after reports that a baby’s body had been found. Officers from the Auburn police area command located the body of the newborn boy, police said. According to acting superintendent Darren Sly, a local resident found the baby while putting out rubbish. Sly said the baby was unclothed and inside a plastic rubbish bag. Police have established a crime scene and detectives have begun an investigation. They said they have serious concerns about the welfare of the baby’s mother and appealed to her to attend the nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment. Sly told 2GB radio that police believed the baby had been born within the previous 36 hours, although he said the body would require a more thorough examination.
