A rare viewing angle turned Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands into what appeared to be a giant silver lens in a photograph taken from the International Space Station on Jan. 8, 2023. The effect, known as sunglint, occurs when sunlight reflects from a relatively smooth water surface directly toward a camera. In the astronaut photograph, the Pacific Ocean and Lake Tegano both shine with a metallic appearance, while shadows from clouds break up the bright surface. The glare is most pronounced over the western side of the lake and a horseshoe-shaped bay along the island’s southern edge. According to the reporting, those areas are more sheltered from wind, leaving the water calmer and more reflective. Rennell Island, also known as Mugaba or Mu Nggava, is one of the southernmost islands in the Solomon Islands. It stretches up to about 50 miles (80 kilometers) in length and is roughly 8 miles (13 kilometers) wide at its broadest point. At its southeastern end is Lake Tegano, a brackish lake covering approximately 60 square miles (155 square kilometers). The lake is described as the largest on a Pacific island and is enclosed by a jagged coral formation covered in dense forest. Rennell itself is an atoll built on the remains of an ancient coral reef. Its highest point reaches about 500 feet (150 meters) above sea level, making it the world’s tallest atoll according to Britannica, as cited in the report. Sunglint can help scientists identify features that are difficult to see under ordinary conditions, including subsurface currents, internal waves and oil slicks. But the same reflection can obscure imagery, which is why it is often digitally removed from satellite photographs. In this image, the glare hides Rennell’s surrounding fringing reef and several small islands within Lake Tegano. The lake’s surrounding region, known as East Rennell, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains more than 20 endemic bird species. It is also home to the vulnerable Crocker’s sea snake.
