In the deep chambers of Spain’s Cave of El Castillo, prehistoric art may have been intended for more than a stationary view. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the paintings and engravings were created in spaces where firelight, shadows and the natural contours of the cave could transform how the images appeared. Artists visited El Castillo repeatedly between roughly 13,000 and 41,000 years ago. Nearly 3,000 drawings, hand stencils, engravings and geometric designs remain legible there, including animals painted in charcoal and red, orange and brown ochres. Archaeologists studying the cave have found that many images were positioned around existing features in the stone. A jut in the wall appears to form the muscular back of a bison, while cracks and ridges in other caves were incorporated into elk antlers and horse outlines. The animals could seem to disappear into fissures or emerge from them. That effect may have been especially striking when viewed by torchlight. Unlike the steady white beam of a modern flashlight, a torch produced flickering red illumination and constantly shifting shadows. Researchers have increasingly examined cave art as an experience involving light, sound, touch and placement—not simply as pictures displayed on a wall. One particularly dramatic example at El Castillo is the so-called “bison man,” a figure carved into a central stalagmite. When archaeologist Diego Garate directed a flashlight at it, a shadow resembling a bipedal bison appeared on the rear wall. Moving the light made the shadow seem to walk. The demonstration does not establish that the prehistoric artist deliberately created the effect. Garate noted that a modern flashlight produces a much stronger and farther-reaching beam than a small flickering torch, which may not have projected the same shadow. Researchers could potentially examine the question with digital cave reconstructions and virtual-reality simulations of ancient lighting. Other evidence also points to a close relationship between the artists and the cave surfaces. Studies of hand stencils at El Castillo found that many were placed near fissures, undulations or concave areas, sometimes where a person could steady themselves. The findings suggest that Paleolithic artists may have responded to forms they encountered in the rock rather than treating the walls as blank canvases. What remains uncertain is how intentional these visual effects were. The cave’s shapes may have inspired the art, enhanced it under firelight, or both.
