Iceberg Slams Into Greenland Coast, Then Splits and Rolls Apart

A massive iceberg encountered Greenland’s coastline in spectacular fashion, stopping its forward movement but continuing to shift, crack and break apart under the stress of the impact. The event took place on July 26 near Ilulissat, on Greenland’s west coast, according to Neatorama. A time-lapse video compresses roughly an hour of activity into 10 minutes, with the playback speed changing during the sequence. After the iceberg struck land, it began to shudder and bob. Large sections broke away and fell into the water, churning the sea around the ice. As the iceberg’s shape and size changed, it rolled to one side, exposing more of the mass that had been below the surface. The shifting continued until the iceberg split. That division altered the balance of the remaining ice, and the pieces moved apart. By the end of the recorded sequence, the portion still visible was smaller but remained enormous, while the split had pushed it away from the section it had separated from. The footage presents the collision as a prolonged transformation rather than a single impact: the iceberg stops against the coast, but its momentum continues to reshape it through cracking, falling ice, rolling and separation.
