Donald Trump has revealed a proposed new uniform for the US Space Force, describing its design as influenced by the discipline and functionality of the uniforms in the 1997 science-fiction film Starship Troopers.
The rendering, posted by Trump on Truth Social, shows a sharply fitted dark tunic, a peaked cap with insignia and knee-high boots. The proposed palette includes “space grey,” “midnight black,” “silver grey” and “satin black.” The image appears to have been generated with artificial intelligence, according to Mirror Weird News.
The design has prompted comparisons with Nazi military clothing because Starship Troopers deliberately adopted fascist and Nazi-inspired imagery. Director Paul Verhoeven, who grew up in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, previously described the movie as an ironic depiction of a “fascist utopia.” He also said the film was about fascists who did not recognize their own fascism.
The movie’s visual references included propaganda-film aesthetics associated with Nazi Germany. Neil Patrick Harris, who played a senior military officer, wore clothing that Verhoeven described as essentially an SS uniform. Contemporary reviews also pointed to the film’s Nazi-influenced fashions and military styling.
Trump’s proposal would be a marked change from the Space Force’s current uniform. That outfit has a looser tunic, a diagonal front fastening and six buttons, representing the service’s status as the sixth branch of the US military. The existing design has itself previously been compared with the uniforms of Imperial officers in Star Wars.
The new rendering does not reproduce the long leather coat worn by Harris’s character in Starship Troopers, but its dark tunic, peaked cap and boots share the film’s militaristic appearance. Menswear writer Derek Guy criticized the design, saying it resembled the kind of costume used to signal that characters are the villains in a space movie.
